Choosing the suitable tiles for your kitchen and bath

December 8, 2017

Porcelain tiles and Ceramic tiles are the most common type of tiles that you can see in tile shop. but what are the difference between these two type of tiles? how do you choose the suitable tiles for your kitchen and bath? Here, I am giving some ideas about porcelain and ceramic tiles to you, based on the Water Absorption, the PEI Rating, Durability and Colors.

Water Absorption:

According to American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) C373. Porcelain tile has a water absorption rate of less then 0.5%, ceramic tiles has a water absorption rate of 0.5%-3.0%. Porcelain has a lower water absorption rate than ceramic. porcelain tiles are denser, harder and less pervious to water than ceramic tiles. This means that some porcelain tiles can be used virtually anywhere, and they have the advantage over ceramic tiles in outdoor areas, wet areas and areas of high traffic. As the result, Porcelain tile is harder and more impervious to moisture than ceramic tile. we suggest porcelain tiles use on flooring at kitchen and bath, ceramic tiles use as wall tiles.

PEI Ratings:

The PEI rating is an indication of tile hardness and they are a valuable guide to tile choices for different projects. Both Ceramic and porcelain tiles are rated, but because of the natural hardness designed into porcelain most people seem to be more concerned about the PEI rating of ceramic tile. PEI Rating from the lowest class 0 (tiles technically unsuitable for floors) to the highest class 5 (Extra heavy traffic, abrasive dirt, chemically more resistant). PEI ratings for porcelain tiles to be around class 5 (heavy traffic), PEI ratings for ceramic from class 0 to class 3, but most of ceramic tiles rating at lower end of the scales.

Durability of tile:

Not only is porcelain tile more dense than ceramic tile, but due to its through-body composition, it is considered more durable and better suited for heavy usage than ceramic tile. While both porcelain and ceramic are fired, porcelain is fired at higher temperatures for a longer time than ceramic. Also, porcelain has higher feldspar content, which makes it more durable. So, porcelain tiles is longer durable than ceramic tiles.

The rule of colors:

Lighter colors make a space appear larger. Darker colors add warmth and hide dirt well. Neutral colors allow you to change your accessories but if you love a trendy color. tiles can be use a long time, the durability around 50 years. just keep in mind, choose your color seriously, because the labor fee cost a lot.
