Porcelain tiles and ceramic tiles are two of the most common types of tiles you can see in home renovation. What's the difference between the two? How do you select the right one for your kitchen and bathroom? To help you better understand porcelain and ceramic tiles, we will go over their differences based on water absorption, PEI rating and durability.
Water Absorption
Porcelain tiles have a lower water absorption rate than ceramic tiles. According to the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM C373), the water absorption rate of porcelain tiles is less than 0.5%, while it is 0.5%-3.0% for ceramic tiles. Porcelain tiles are denser, harder and more impervious to water than ceramic tiles. This means porcelain tiles
have the advantage over ceramic tiles in outdoor areas, wet areas and areas of high traffic, and some porcelain tiles can be used virtually anywhere. We suggest using porcelain tiles for flooring in the kitchen and bathroom areas while using ceramic tiles as wall tiles.
PEI Ratings PEI评分
The PEI (Porcelain Enamel Institute) rating is an indication of tile hardness and a valuable guide to tile selection for different projects. The PEI rating includes six classes. Tiles in the lowest class, class 0, are technically unsuitable for underfoot use. They are usually used for light-duty on walls only. The highest class, class 5, is for heavy traffic with abrasive dirt. Typically with a less appealing appearance, it is mostly only used for flooring. The PEI rating for porcelain tiles is usually around class 5, while ceramic tiles are usually from class 0 to class 3.
Durability of tile
Porcelain tiles are denser and more durable than ceramic tiles thanks to their through-body composition. While both porcelain and ceramic are heated, porcelain is processed at higher temperatures for a longer duration than ceramic. Also, porcelain has higher feldspar content, which makes it more durable.
